Android App Timer Not Working? 8 Checks for Limits, Resets & Managed Apps

Android app timer not working? Check the exact app, remaining daily time, midnight reset, managed profiles, deleted timers and PIN protection.

If an Android app timer seems to stop working, first check whether the limit actually expired, reset at midnight, or was removed. Digital Wellbeing app timers are daily limits, not permanent blocks, and Google notes that they reset at midnight.

The safest troubleshooting path is to verify the timer on the exact app, confirm the daily limit, check for work/profile duplicates, and rebuild only the affected timer before changing broader settings.

1. Confirm the timer is attached to the right app

Open Settings → Digital Wellbeing → App timers and check the app name. If your phone supports cloned apps, work profiles or dual-app features, make sure you limited the copy you actually use.

2. Check how much time is left today

Digital Wellbeing tracks daily usage. If the timer has not yet expired, the app should still open normally. Review the remaining allowance before assuming the limit failed.

3. Remember that app timers reset at midnight

Google states that app timers reset at midnight. If an app becomes available again after midnight, that is expected behavior rather than a bug.

4. Check whether the timer was deleted

Android allows you to remove an app timer before midnight. If the timer was deleted manually, the app can be used again immediately. Reopen App timers and confirm that the limit is still present.

5. Work and school accounts may behave differently

Google notes that some work and school accounts might not work with app timers. If the app belongs to a managed profile, your organization’s policies can affect the feature.

6. Recreate the timer for the affected app

Remove the existing timer, restart the phone, then set a fresh limit for that one app. This is more targeted than clearing Digital Wellbeing data or resetting device settings.

7. Check Android and Digital Wellbeing updates

Install pending Android and Google system updates and test the timer again. Manufacturer-specific software can change the location or presentation of Digital Wellbeing features.

8. Use an app-limits PIN when the problem is manual bypassing

On supported versions, Digital Wellbeing can protect app time limits with a PIN. This is useful when the “problem” is not a broken timer but someone repeatedly deleting or changing the limit.

What happens when the timer expires?

Google says the app closes and its icon dims when the daily limit is reached. To use it again before midnight, the timer has to be changed or removed.

App timer vs Focus Mode

Use an app timer when you want a daily usage budget. Use Focus Mode when you want selected apps temporarily unavailable during work, study or another scheduled period. Our Focus Mode troubleshooting guide covers that feature separately.
