APKMirror also lists Android Auto 17.8.1638 beta as a Google-signed release uploaded on September 18, 2026. That confirms the build exists, but it does not prove the signal-bar fix is enabled for every beta tester.
Why the fix may not appear immediately
The rollout appears inconsistent. Some users report that the signal bars returned after installing the beta, while others saw them disappear and reappear without a clear version change. That raises the possibility that Google is also controlling part of the behavior server-side.
In other words, installing the same Android Auto version does not guarantee the same dashboard state on every phone and vehicle combination.
Should you clear Android Auto’s cache?
One user report cited by Android Authority and 9to5Google says the signal bars returned after clearing Android Auto’s cache. That makes cache clearing a reasonable low-risk troubleshooting step, but it is not a guaranteed fix.
- Open Settings → Apps → Android Auto on your phone.
- Open Storage & cache.
- Tap Clear cache.
- Reconnect the phone to the vehicle and check the dashboard again.
Avoid clearing app data unless you are prepared to reconfigure Android Auto preferences. Clearing cache is the safer first step because it removes temporary files without fully resetting the app.
Should you install the beta just for this fix?
For most users, no. The stable Android Auto channel is the safer choice for a feature used while driving. The signal-bar issue does not appear to break navigation, calls or mobile data, so there is little reason to sideload a beta solely for a cosmetic dashboard repair.
If you are already enrolled in the official Android Auto beta program, version 17.8 may restore the icon. Stable users are better off waiting for Google to move the fix into a regular release.
