On recent Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO devices, you can usually change DNS through Android’s Private DNS setting. Xiaomi’s current support documentation for newer devices places it under Settings → More connectivity options → Private DNS. Older MIUI builds may use labels such as Connection & sharing, so the quickest method is often to search Settings for “Private DNS.”
Set Private DNS on HyperOS
- Open Settings.
- Open More connectivity options.
- Tap Private DNS.
- Select Private DNS provider hostname.
- Enter the resolver hostname.
- Tap Save.
Useful Private DNS hostnames
- Google:
dns.google - Cloudflare:
one.one.one.one - Quad9:
dns.quad9.net - AdGuard public DNS:
dns.adguard-dns.com
If your goal is Google DNS, the numeric addresses 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 are not the same input as the Private DNS hostname. See the Google DNS Android setup guide for the distinction.
Where is Private DNS on older MIUI?
Menu names can differ across MIUI versions, regions and device families. Look under connection/network settings and use the Settings search field. If the device runs an Android version older than Android 9, the system-wide Private DNS feature may not be available at all.
Changing DNS only for a Wi-Fi network
You can also edit a saved Wi-Fi network and manually enter DNS IP addresses. On many Android builds this requires changing IP settings to Static, which also exposes the device IP, gateway and prefix length. Do not alter those values without recording the current configuration first.
For manual Wi-Fi DNS, common public addresses include Google 8.8.8.8/8.8.4.4 and Cloudflare 1.1.1.1/1.0.0.1.
Does Private DNS work on mobile data?
Yes, Android Private DNS is intended to apply across networks, including cellular, when the provider hostname is reachable. That makes it more useful than a per-Wi-Fi DNS edit if you also want custom DNS on 4G or 5G.
Read how to use Private DNS on mobile data for carrier and VPN caveats.
If “Private DNS server cannot be accessed” appears
- Confirm the hostname has no
https://prefix. - Try the same hostname on another Wi-Fi network or mobile data.
- Temporarily disconnect VPN/security apps.
- Complete any public Wi-Fi sign-in page first.
- Return to Automatic if a managed network requires its own DNS.
Our Private DNS troubleshooting guide covers these cases in more detail.
Which DNS should Xiaomi users choose?
Do not choose only by a single “fastest DNS” list. Resolver latency varies by country, ISP and time of day. Compare providers on the network you actually use. DNS Changer Pro & Speed Test can help with Android DNS testing.
