Copy and Paste Not Working on Android? Fix Clipboard Problems Safely

If copy and paste stops working on Android, the fastest fix depends on what is actually failing: copying text, the Paste command, clipboard history, or only one app. Treat those as separate symptoms before clearing data or installing a third-party clipboard manager.

Android’s clipboard is a system feature, while keyboards such as Gboard can add their own clipboard-history interface. Android 13 and newer also show a system clipboard preview when content is copied, and apps can mark sensitive copied data so the preview hides its contents. That means a missing clipboard-history entry does not always mean copying itself failed.

First: identify which part of copy and paste is broken

Copy a short, ordinary sentence from a browser or notes app. Then try to paste it into two unrelated apps. Watch for three different outcomes:

• Nothing copies: no selection action or copy feedback appears.
• Copy works but Paste is missing or does nothing: the destination app or text field may be the problem.
• Normal paste works but clipboard history is empty: focus on the keyboard’s clipboard feature rather than Android’s basic copy/paste function.

1. Test plain text in two different apps

Start with plain text rather than an image, formatted document, password field or file. Android supports more than plain text on the clipboard, but apps can handle rich content and URIs differently. A paste failure involving only an image or formatted object does not prove the whole clipboard is broken.

If plain text pastes normally in one destination but fails in another, do not reset the keyboard or phone. Update or troubleshoot the affected app instead.

2. Restart the affected apps, then restart the phone

Close the source and destination apps and reopen them. If copy/paste still fails across multiple apps, restart Android and repeat the same plain-text test before changing settings. A restart is low risk and can clear a temporary process or input-method problem without deleting clipboard-related settings.

3. Check whether the problem is Gboard clipboard history

With Gboard open, look for Clipboard in the toolbar or the expanded toolbar menu. Clipboard history is a keyboard feature layered on top of Android’s system clipboard. If you can copy text and immediately paste it with a long-press but do not see older clips in Gboard, basic Android copy/paste is still functioning.

Do not confuse a history-retention rule with a failed clipboard. Keyboard versions and manufacturer keyboards can retain, pin or display clips differently, so check the controls actually shown on your device.

4. Remember that sensitive content can behave differently

Android’s developer documentation tells apps to flag copied passwords, credit-card data and other sensitive content. On Android 13 and newer, that flag prevents the sensitive value from appearing in the system clipboard preview. A hidden preview therefore does not necessarily mean the copy operation failed.

For diagnosis, use harmless sample text. Never paste passwords, authentication codes or financial data into random apps simply to test the clipboard.

5. Update Android, Gboard and the affected app

After updating, repeat the same plain-text copy/paste test. Changing one variable at a time makes it easier to identify what actually fixed the problem.

6. Force stop Gboard only if the keyboard clipboard is the failing layer

If ordinary paste works but Gboard’s clipboard button is frozen, missing content or behaving abnormally, go to Settings > Apps > Gboard and use Force stop, then reopen a text field. Menu names vary by Android manufacturer.

If Gboard has broader problems such as crashes or lag, clear its cache before considering storage/data reset. Clearing storage is more disruptive because it resets app state and preferences.

7. If only one app cannot paste, troubleshoot that app

Some text fields intentionally restrict paste, and apps can implement clipboard handling differently. If copy/paste works everywhere except one app, force stop and update that app, then test a different field inside it if possible. Clearing the entire keyboard’s data is unlikely to be justified by a failure isolated to one destination.

8. Be careful with images, links and rich content

Android can place text, URIs and other data representations on the clipboard. The destination app still has to understand what it receives. If text works but an image, file or formatted object does not, try sharing the item through Android’s Share sheet or use the app’s own attachment/import control. That is often more reliable than treating every rich-content failure as a clipboard fault.

9. Avoid third-party clipboard managers as a first fix

A clipboard can contain private links, addresses, account details and authentication data. Installing another app with the goal of capturing clipboard history expands the number of places where copied information may be handled. Diagnose Android, the keyboard and the affected app first, and review any app’s privacy practices before giving it access to sensitive workflows.

10. Reset app data only after you have isolated the failing component

If Gboard is conclusively the failing layer and force stop, updates and cache clearing have not helped, resetting Gboard storage can be considered. Expect keyboard preferences to be reset. If the problem belongs to one third-party app, reset that app only after checking what local data the reset will remove.

A factory reset is not a reasonable early response to a clipboard problem. Consider broader system recovery only when multiple core Android functions fail and ordinary app-level troubleshooting has already ruled out narrower causes.

Why Android 13+ clipboard behavior can look different

Android 13 introduced system feedback when content enters the clipboard. Google’s Android Developers documentation also explains that sensitive copied content can be hidden from this preview. These privacy behaviors are deliberate and can make the clipboard look different from older Android versions even when copy and paste are working normally.

Bottom line

When copy and paste is not working on Android, test plain text across two apps first. If immediate paste works but history does not, investigate the keyboard clipboard. If only one app fails, troubleshoot that app. If the problem is system-wide, restart and update before clearing data. Keep sensitive information out of clipboard tests and reserve destructive resets for cases where the failing component has been clearly identified.
