Gemini and Google Assistant overlap on Android in 2026, but they are not identical. Gemini is Google’s generative-AI assistant experience on phones and tablets, while Google Assistant still powers some devices and can still be selected as the primary assistant on supported Android phones.
The practical difference is that Gemini is built around conversational AI, reasoning, multimodal input, Gemini Live and Connected Apps, while Google Assistant remains closely associated with classic voice-assistant actions and other Google Assistant devices.
Gemini is the newer mobile assistant experience
When Gemini is selected as the primary mobile assistant, “Hey Google,” the assistant gesture or a configured power-button shortcut can open Gemini instead of Google Assistant.
Google says Gemini can help with many tasks that Google Assistant handled, but some features and devices still use Assistant directly.
Where Google Assistant still remains
Google’s current Gemini documentation says devices such as smart displays, smart speakers, TVs, cars and some Pixel Tablet states continue to use Google Assistant directly.
On Pixel Tablet, for example, Gemini can replace Assistant while the tablet is unlocked, while locked or Hub Mode requests can still be handled by Google Assistant.
Gemini’s biggest advantage: richer AI conversation
Gemini is designed for longer prompts, summarization, brainstorming, explanations, image understanding and other generative-AI tasks that go beyond a traditional voice command.
Gemini Live adds a continuous voice-conversation mode that lets you interrupt, change direction, and on supported devices share your camera or screen.
Google Assistant still has value for familiar device-control workflows
Some users prefer Google Assistant because they already rely on its familiar command behavior or because a specific device ecosystem still uses Assistant directly.
Feature availability also varies by language, country and account. A task working in Google Assistant but not Gemini—or the reverse—can be a support difference rather than a phone problem.
Connected Apps make Gemini more capable on Android
Gemini can use supported Connected Apps for tasks involving Phone, Messages, WhatsApp, Google services and other integrations when the necessary settings, permissions and account access are available.
That capability can make Gemini more useful, but it also means users should review which services are connected and understand how activity settings affect them.
Gemini and Assistant use different activity controls
Gemini Apps Activity is separate from Google Assistant’s Web & App Activity behavior. Google specifically notes that switching back to Google Assistant does not automatically delete data already saved in Gemini Apps Activity.

Can you switch back to Google Assistant?
Yes, on supported Android devices Google currently documents a switch inside the Gemini mobile app:
- Open the Gemini mobile app.
- Open the menu and your profile.
- Choose Switch to Google Assistant.
- Select Google Assistant and confirm the switch.
You can also change or remove the default digital assistant from Android’s default-app settings, although menu names vary by manufacturer.

Which one fits which use case?
If you mainly want longer AI conversations, writing help, explanations, multimodal input or Gemini Live, Gemini is the relevant experience. If you depend on a legacy Assistant workflow or another device that still uses Google Assistant, keeping Assistant available can still matter.
The important point is that Android still lets supported users switch, so you do not have to treat the choice as permanent.
