If your goal is to build an Android music collection you can keep as ordinary files, start with the source rather than the downloader app.
The safest sources are stores and catalogs where the artist, label or license clearly allows the download.
1. Bandcamp
Bandcamp is one of the clearest mainstream examples of an artist-support model. Its Android listing describes the service as an online record store and music community where fans can buy music and merch and listen to purchased music online or offline.
For independent music, it is a strong first place to check because the relationship between artist, purchase and listener is explicit.
2. Artist and label stores
Many artists and labels sell or provide downloads directly from their own websites. The exact file formats and download rights vary, so read the purchase or license terms rather than assuming every store behaves the same way.
Direct stores are especially useful for releases that are difficult to find on subscription platforms.
3. Free Music Archive
Free Music Archive provides open-licensed music from independent artists. Its FAQ explains that “free” does not mean unrestricted: many tracks use Creative Commons licenses with conditions such as attribution, noncommercial use or no derivatives.
For personal listening, check the specific track license. If you plan to reuse music in a video, podcast or commercial project, the license details matter even more.
4. Jamendo
Jamendo’s current support and developer material says music on Jamendo Music is published under Creative Commons licenses and that listeners can legally stream, download and share according to the license selected by the artist.
As with FMA, do not treat every Creative Commons track as having identical permissions.
5. Public-domain and open archives
Projects such as Open Music Archive distribute out-of-copyright recordings and clearly mark public-domain or open-license material. These collections are more specialized than a streaming service, but they can be valuable for historical recordings and open culture.
Where a local Android app fits
After you legally obtain the file, a local player can organize and play it. Musicolet, Poweramp, AIMP and VLC are established options.

Prefer official artist/label pages, established stores and clearly labeled open-license catalogs.
