If Gemini Live is missing, will not start, cannot hear you, or camera/screen sharing stops, first check whether the problem is availability, permissions, notifications or expected Live behavior. Gemini Live has its own requirements and some features roll out gradually, so a missing button does not always mean the app is broken.
Google’s current Android documentation says Gemini Live requires an Android phone or tablet, the Gemini mobile app or Gemini as your mobile assistant, a signed-in eligible account and the latest Google app.
1. Update the Gemini and Google apps
Update both the Gemini mobile app and the main Google app from Google Play. Google specifically lists the latest Google app as a requirement for Gemini Live.
2. Check whether Live is available for your account and rollout
Google notes that Gemini Live updates roll out gradually. Features shown in documentation may not appear on every account at exactly the same time.
Work or school accounts also need access to Gemini Apps from the organization. If a personal account has Live but a managed account does not, account policy may be the difference.
3. Make sure you are signed in
Gemini Live requires you to be signed in to Gemini Apps. If ordinary web search works but Live does not appear, verify the active Google Account inside Gemini.
4. Check microphone access if Live cannot hear you
If Live opens but does not detect your voice, review Android microphone permission for the Google/Gemini experience and make sure the device-wide microphone privacy control is not disabled.
Test the microphone in another app to separate a system microphone problem from a Gemini Live problem.
5. Enable Gemini Live notifications for background use
Google states that Gemini Live notifications must be enabled if you want Live to keep working in the background. If the conversation stops as soon as you leave the app, check the notification setting before changing battery or account settings.
6. Screen sharing also depends on Live notifications
On Android, Gemini Live screen sharing requires Gemini Live notifications to be enabled. When you share your screen, the entire screen is shared with Gemini, so stop sharing before opening sensitive information you do not want included.
7. Know when camera sharing stops automatically
Google says the Live camera automatically turns off when the Live conversation is put on hold, when you leave the Gemini mobile app, or when the screen is locked. Returning to the app does not automatically turn the camera back on after every case.
If camera sharing stops exactly when you lock the device or leave Gemini, that can be expected behavior rather than a crash.
8. Screen sharing stops when Live is put on hold or the screen locks
Google documents that screen sharing stops when Live is put on hold or the screen locks. It does not automatically restart when you resume the conversation or unlock the phone; you need to start sharing again.
9. Live cannot always use every Gemini feature
Gemini Live is not identical to standard Gemini chat. Google currently notes, for example, that Gems are not available in Live, and some Connected Apps or actions can have different support.
If a command works in ordinary Gemini chat but not Live, check the feature’s own documentation before treating it as a bug.
10. Check the network before reinstalling
Live is an interactive online conversation, so unstable Wi-Fi, mobile data or a problematic VPN route can make audio stall or sessions fail. Compare Wi-Fi and mobile data and temporarily remove VPN routing as a diagnostic test.
11. Restart the phone if Live state is stuck
If requirements, permissions and networking are correct but Live remains stuck, restart the phone before clearing app data. Then reopen Gemini and start a fresh Live session.
Fast Live diagnosis
- Live button missing: check rollout, account, app versions and availability.
- Live opens but cannot hear you: check microphone permission and microphone privacy controls.
- Live stops in background: check Gemini Live notifications.
- Screen sharing option fails: enable Live notifications and follow the screen-sharing prompt.
- Camera stops after locking the phone: this is documented behavior.
- Only one feature fails inside Live: verify whether that feature is supported in Live.

Gemini Live troubleshooting FAQ
Why is Gemini Live missing on my Android phone?
Check that Gemini and the Google app are updated, that you are signed in with an eligible account, and that Live is available for your account and rollout. A missing Live button can be an availability issue rather than an app failure.
Why does Gemini Live stop when I leave the app?
Google says Live notifications need to be enabled for background use. Camera and screen sharing can also stop when Live is put on hold or the phone is locked, so those behaviors are not always crashes.
