What Organic Maps does
Organic Maps provides offline map downloads, turn-by-turn navigation, walking and cycling routes, hiking trails, bookmarks, offline search, Wikipedia-based place information and Android Auto support. It is especially useful when mobile data is expensive, unreliable or unavailable.
What changed in this release
The 2026.08.27 F-Droid release includes newer OpenStreetMap data, multi-selection for bookmarks and tracks, individual track visibility controls, additional Wikipedia languages, Android Auto fixes, improved search and several map-data improvements.
Important F-Droid anti-feature note
F-Droid currently flags Organic Maps for non-free assets. The app itself is distributed under Apache-2.0, but F-Droid notes that compiled binary map-data files such as .mwm files are under a non-FOSS license. SSM Apps includes this note because “open-source app” and “every distributed asset is under a free-software license” are not exactly the same claim.
Privacy and offline navigation
Organic Maps is built around offline map files and does not require a cloud account to save local bookmarks or calculate many routes. Location permission is still necessary for GPS positioning and navigation, and map downloads obviously require network access when obtaining or updating map regions.

Bottom line
Organic Maps is a useful worldwide direct-download topic because it solves a common Android need—offline maps and navigation—while providing a transparent F-Droid package path. The licensing caveat around compiled map assets is disclosed rather than hidden.
