YouTube channel security is not just about avoiding hacks. Verification also controls access to features such as longer uploads, custom thumbnails, live streaming, higher daily limits and other advanced tools.
Phone verification unlocks intermediate features
YouTube currently uses phone verification as the first step for intermediate feature access. After verification, creators can access features that include longer uploads, custom thumbnails, live streaming and copyright-claim appeals.
YouTube limits how many channels can use the same phone number for verification within a year, so creators managing several channels should plan ownership carefully.
How advanced features are unlocked
After phone verification, creators can gain access to Advanced features by either building sufficient channel history or, where available, completing ID or video verification.
YouTube says Advanced features can include tools such as pinned comments and higher daily upload limits. Some features still have their own separate eligibility rules.
Channel history matters
YouTube evaluates channel history using signals such as uploads, live streams, audience engagement and Google Account usage. Active channels that consistently follow Community Guidelines can often unlock advanced access without submitting ID or video.
ID and video verification
ID and video verification are optional alternatives for eligible creators who want faster access to Advanced features. YouTube notes that these methods are not available to every creator.
Only the primary channel owner can complete identity verification for a Brand Account. That matters for teams where several managers have access to the same channel.
Use 2-Step Verification
Google recommends 2-Step Verification to reduce the risk of account takeover. For stronger phishing resistance, Google recommends passkeys or security keys rather than relying only on SMS codes.
Why passkeys are useful
Passkeys use a device unlock method such as a fingerprint, face scan or screen lock. Because the credential is tied to the legitimate service and device, passkeys are more resistant to phishing than a password that can be copied into a fake login page.
Common phishing attacks against creators
YouTube creators are frequent targets for fake sponsorships, malware attachments and account-access scams. YouTube advises creators to be suspicious of messages offering free cryptocurrency, marketing help that requires channel access, or password-protected/encrypted files from unknown senders.
Legitimate emails from YouTube come from @youtube.com or @google.com domains, but creators should still inspect links carefully before signing in.
Do not share channel passwords
Teams should use YouTube and Google account permissions instead of sharing the primary owner’s password. Shared passwords make it harder to control access, audit changes and recover from a compromised team member.
Security checklist for creators
- Enable 2-Step Verification.
- Use a passkey or security key when possible.
- Keep recovery email and phone details current.
- Complete phone verification for intermediate features.
- Check Feature eligibility inside YouTube Studio.
- Use channel permissions instead of password sharing.
- Scan unexpected downloads before opening them.
- Do not sign in through links sent in suspicious sponsorship emails.
- Review connected apps and remove access you no longer need.
What if Advanced features disappear?
YouTube says creators can lose Advanced feature access if they do not maintain a positive channel history or repeatedly violate Community Guidelines. Access can be rebuilt over time or restored through eligible verification methods.
Verification is not the same as the public verification badge
Phone, ID and video verification are feature-access systems. They are separate from the public channel verification badge shown next to some established channel names.
