YouTube comment moderation is no longer just a choice between leaving comments on or turning them off. Creators can combine blocked words, link filtering, hidden users, approved users and moderators to build a cleaner discussion layer around a channel.

Blocked words

YouTube lets creators add words and phrases to a blocked-words list. Comments containing or closely matching those terms can be held for review instead of publishing immediately.

Blocked words also affect live chat and can prevent viewers from using the same terms when creating clips from your videos and live streams.

Comments with links

You can choose to hold comments containing URLs for review. This is useful for reducing spam, fake giveaways, phishing attempts and low-quality self-promotion.

Comments posted by you, moderators or approved users are handled differently, so trusted contributors can still share necessary links.

Hidden users

Hiding a user prevents their comments from appearing across your channel. YouTube also notes that hidden users cannot create clips from your videos and live streams.

Use this for persistent abuse or spam rather than arguing repeatedly with the same account.

Approved users

Approved users can bypass some automated filters, including blocked words, blocked links and potentially inappropriate-content filters. Only approve people you trust, because their comments can publish more freely.

Standard vs managing moderators

YouTube supports both Standard moderators and Managing moderators. Managing moderators have broader moderation controls, while both types can help hold comments for review.

Moderators do not automatically receive full YouTube Studio access simply because they can moderate comments.

Held comments

Inside YouTube Studio, creators can review held comments and choose to approve, remove, report spam or abuse, hide the user, or always approve that user in the future.

Comments held because of blocked words or links can remain in the Held queue for up to 60 days.

Newer AI-assisted comment search

YouTube introduced optional semantic search tools in Studio that can help creators find comments by broader topic or meaning rather than only exact keyword matches. Creators can search for themes such as questions about a specific topic, negative feedback or repeated requests and then decide what moderation action to take.

These tools help find relevant comments; they do not automatically remove content on the creator’s behalf.

Build moderation rules before the channel grows

It is easier to define a moderation policy before a channel receives thousands of comments. Decide in advance how you will handle:

  • Spam and self-promotion
  • Personal attacks
  • Repeated misinformation
  • Links
  • Off-topic promotion
  • Legitimate criticism

Do not treat disagreement as abuse. Good moderation removes noise without turning the comment section into an approval-only echo chamber.

Practical moderation setup

  1. Add recurring scam phrases to blocked words.
  2. Turn on link holding if spam links are a problem.
  3. Hide persistent abusive accounts.
  4. Use approved users sparingly.
  5. Add a trusted moderator when comment volume becomes difficult to manage alone.
  6. Review the Held queue on a schedule instead of leaving it untouched for weeks.
