YouTube Handles in 2026: @Usernames, URLs, Change Limits & Naming Strategy

A practical YouTube handles guide for 2026 covering @usernames, handle URLs, the twice-in-14-days change limit, old-handle retention and creator naming strategy.

A YouTube handle is the unique @name attached to a channel. It appears across comments, mentions, Shorts and channel URLs and acts as one of the channel’s most recognizable public identifiers.

Handle vs channel name

Your channel name and handle are related but different. Multiple channels can have similar display names, but a handle must be unique.

A clean handle makes it easier for viewers to mention the channel and remember its URL.

How often can you change a handle?

YouTube currently lets creators change their handle twice within a 14-day period.

When you change it, YouTube holds the previous handle for 14 days in case you want to switch back. During that period, both the old handle URL and the new handle URL continue to work. Afterward, the old handle can become available to another user.

Where to change the handle

On desktop, open YouTube Studio, go to Customization and then Profile. The Handle field shows the current @name and handle URL.

If the preferred handle is unavailable, YouTube may suggest alternatives. Periods, numbers and underscores can sometimes help when the exact name is already taken.

Choose a handle that will age well

A creator should avoid changing handles frequently. The best handle is:

  • Easy to spell
  • Easy to say aloud
  • Close to the channel or brand name
  • Short enough to remember
  • Usable across other major platforms when possible

Avoid keyword stuffing

A handle is primarily an identity marker, not a place to stack search keywords. A memorable brand-style handle is usually more useful than a long string of niche terms and numbers.

What happens to old links?

During the 14-day hold period after a handle change, YouTube says both the old and new handle URLs work. After the hold expires, creators should not assume the old handle remains theirs indefinitely.

If the handle appears in websites, social bios, press kits or QR codes, update those references after the change.

Handle changes during a rebrand

If you are rebranding a channel, change the channel name, handle, profile image, banner and description as one coordinated identity update. Avoid repeatedly changing the handle while deciding on a brand direction.

Handle audit checklist

  1. Make sure the spelling matches the brand.
  2. Check whether the same identity can be used on other platforms.
  3. Avoid unnecessary punctuation.
  4. Update external links after a change.
  5. Do not use both allowed changes casually within the same 14-day window.
