YouTube Live Q&A gives creators a structured way to select questions from live chat and answer them during a broadcast. It is useful for interviews, product launches, tutorials, coaching sessions and community streams.
What Live Q&A does
Inside Live Chat, creators can find and select viewer questions to answer. This makes it easier to surface one question at a time instead of trying to follow a fast-moving chat manually.
Use moderators before the stream starts
For busy live streams, add trusted moderators before the event. Moderators can help remove spam, abusive messages and unrelated questions so the Q&A queue stays usable.
See our YouTube Live Chat Moderation guide for the full moderation setup.
Live Q&A is not available in YouTube Analytics
YouTube currently states that Live Q&A details are not available in YouTube Analytics. If specific questions matter for research or content planning, record them separately during or after the stream.
Use slow mode when chat is too fast
Slow mode can reduce message volume and make it easier to identify useful questions. It is especially helpful during large launches or streams where only one or two moderators are available.
AI-generated live chat summaries
YouTube can show AI-generated summaries of public live-chat conversation to viewers joining a stream. YouTube notes that these summaries are experimental and may be inaccurate or inappropriate.
Creators and moderators can disable the live-chat summary per stream in moderation settings.
A practical Live Q&A workflow
- Announce the Q&A format at the start of the stream.
- Ask viewers to keep each question concise.
- Use moderators to remove spam and duplicates.
- Select one question at a time.
- Repeat the question verbally before answering.
- Save strong unanswered questions for future videos.
- Review chat replay after the event for repeated audience problems.
Do not answer every question
A useful Q&A is curated. Prioritize questions that are relevant to the stream topic, useful to many viewers and safe to answer publicly.
Avoid exposing personal information or answering account-specific issues that should be handled privately.
Use repeated questions as content research
If viewers repeatedly ask the same thing, that can be a signal for a dedicated video, Short, FAQ or future livestream. Q&A sessions can therefore act as audience research even when the individual questions are not stored as a separate Analytics report.
Live Q&A checklist
- Add moderators before the event.
- Prepare blocked words.
- Use slow mode if needed.
- Explain the Q&A format.
- Select concise, broadly useful questions.
- Keep a manual note of strong unanswered questions.
- Review chat replay after the stream.
