YouTube Video Chapters divide a long video into labeled sections that viewers can preview and jump between. For tutorials, reviews, podcasts and explainers, chapters can make long content much easier to navigate.
How manual YouTube chapters work
Creators can add chapters by placing timestamps and titles in the video description. YouTube currently requires the first timestamp to begin at 00:00, at least three timestamps in ascending order, and each chapter to be at least 10 seconds long.
Example chapter format
A simple chapter list can look like this:
- 00:00 Introduction
- 01:42 Setup
- 04:15 Main test
- 08:30 Results
- 10:05 Final recommendations
Manual chapters override automatically generated chapters for that video.
Automatic chapters
YouTube can generate chapters automatically for eligible videos. Automatic chapters are enabled by default for new uploads when the feature is available, but creators can disable them for individual videos or in upload defaults.
Not every eligible video will receive automatic chapters. YouTube also says active strikes or content that may be inappropriate for some viewers can make the feature unavailable.
Advanced features access
If chapters are not available on a channel, YouTube directs creators to check access to Advanced features. Phone verification is the first step toward intermediate features, while advanced access can require sufficient channel history or eligible ID/video verification.
Manual vs automatic chapters
Automatic chapters are convenient, but manual chapters give creators more control over wording and structure. For technical guides, courses and long interviews, manually written chapter names are usually easier to align with the actual viewer journey.
Do chapters help SEO?
Chapters should primarily be written for people, not stuffed with keywords. Clear section titles can give YouTube and viewers more context about what appears in different parts of the video, but chapters are not a substitute for a strong title, thumbnail, description and useful content.

When chapters are most useful
- Long tutorials with multiple steps
- Product reviews with separate test sections
- Podcasts and interviews
- Educational lectures
- Comparison videos
- Long troubleshooting guides
When not to overdo chapters
Very short videos do not need a chapter every few seconds. Too many sections can make navigation noisier rather than easier. Use chapters when they represent real changes in topic or task.
Why YouTube chapters may not appear
If manual or automatic chapters are missing, check the basics before assuming the feature is broken.
- The first manual timestamp must start at 00:00.
- You need at least three timestamps in ascending order.
- Each chapter must be at least 10 seconds long.
- The channel may need access to Advanced features.
- Automatic chapters are not generated for every eligible video.
- Active strikes or content that may be inappropriate for some viewers can affect automatic chapter availability.
If manual chapters are formatted correctly, they override YouTube’s automatic chapters. If automatic chapters still do not appear, use manual chapters for important long-form content rather than waiting for the system to generate them.
Chapter checklist
- Start at 00:00.
- Use at least three chapters.
- Keep each chapter at least 10 seconds long.
- Use descriptive section names.
- Check that timestamps still match after editing the video.
- Review automatic chapters before relying on them for important content.
