If JioHotstar is not working on Android, reinstalling the app immediately is not always the best first step. Streaming failures can come from the network, account, DRM system, video decoder, outdated app components or a temporary service issue.
This guide focuses on the most common symptoms: buffering, black screen with audio, login loops, playback errors, poor live-sports quality and app crashes.
1. Check whether the problem affects every video
Open a normal on-demand title and then a live stream. If only one match, channel or episode fails, the problem may be content-specific or service-side rather than a broken installation.
2. Test another network
Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data if possible. If JioHotstar works on mobile data but not Wi-Fi, restart the router and temporarily disable unusual DNS, VPN, proxy or filtering configurations.
3. Force stop JioHotstar and clear cache
On most Android devices, go to Settings → Apps → JioHotstar → Force stop, then open Storage and clear the cache. Start with cache only; clearing all app data signs you out.
4. Update JioHotstar from Google Play
The current package is in.startv.hotstar. Update it directly from Google Play because streaming services frequently change backend APIs, playback logic and DRM requirements.
Open JioHotstar on Google Play
5. Update Google Play services and Android System WebView
Login screens and embedded web components can depend on Google Play services, Chrome or Android System WebView. Update these components and restart the phone.
6. Black screen but audio still plays
A black video area with working audio can point to a video-decoder, DRM or rendering problem. It can also be triggered by a temporary app bug.
- Restart the device.
- Disable screen-recording or overlay apps temporarily.
- Install pending Android system updates.
- Update JioHotstar.
- Test a different title.
- Clear the JioHotstar cache.
7. Login loop or subscription not recognized
Confirm that you are using the same phone number or account associated with the active subscription. If you recently changed plans or restored the app from backup, sign out and sign back in before clearing all data.
8. Live sports keeps buffering
Live streams have less buffering headroom than normal video. Move closer to the router, use 5 GHz Wi-Fi when signal quality is strong, pause large downloads and reduce video quality temporarily.
9. Reinstall only after the basic checks
If the app still fails, uninstall JioHotstar, restart Android and reinstall the official build from Google Play.
10. Check the account on another device
Testing the same account on a second supported phone, tablet or TV can quickly separate an account/service issue from a device-specific problem.
Bottom line
Work from the least destructive fix to the most disruptive: network test → force stop → cache → component updates → restart → account check → reinstall.
