YouTube monetization is no longer limited to ads. For eligible creators, fan funding can turn a loyal audience into recurring or one-time revenue through Channel Memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers and Super Thanks.
Channel Memberships
Channel Memberships let viewers make recurring monthly payments in exchange for creator-defined perks such as badges, emoji, members-only posts, videos or live streams.
YouTube requires eligible creators to meet the minimum fan-funding requirements, live in an available location, comply with the relevant Commerce Product Module and avoid channel conditions that make memberships unavailable. Channels set as Made for Kids, or channels with a significant amount of ineligible content, may not qualify.
Super Chat and Super Stickers
Super Chat and Super Stickers are designed for live streams and Premieres. Viewers can pay to highlight a message or send an animated sticker in live chat.
They are not available on every video. Eligibility depends on the creator, location, content settings and whether live chat is available.
Super Thanks
Super Thanks is a one-time fan-funding purchase available on eligible long-form videos and Shorts. A buyer receives a special animation and can post a highlighted comment. Unlike Super Chat, Super Thanks is built mainly for published video content rather than the live moment.
Why fan funding matters
Ad revenue depends heavily on advertiser demand, geography, seasonality and viewer behavior. Fan funding creates another monetization layer that depends more directly on audience loyalty.
This does not mean every channel needs complicated membership tiers. Smaller creators often benefit from a simple offer that can be delivered consistently.
Useful membership perks
- Members-only posts or polls
- Early access to selected videos
- Behind-the-scenes updates
- Members-only live streams
- Badges and emoji
- Occasional Q&A sessions
Avoid perks that create unsustainable manual work for every new member.
Fan funding and the YouTube Partner Program
YouTube’s expanded YPP can provide earlier access to fan-funding and Shopping features for eligible creators before they reach the full advertising-revenue threshold. Exact availability depends on country and channel status.
For the broader eligibility structure, see our YouTube monetization requirements guide.
Memberships vs ads vs Shorts revenue
These systems solve different problems. Advertising monetizes views. Memberships monetize recurring loyalty. Supers monetize high-intent fan moments. Shorts revenue monetizes eligible distribution in the Shorts Feed.
