YouTube Shorts Series is a new 2026 feature that lets creators turn groups of Shorts into structured seasons and episodes instead of publishing every short-form video as an isolated clip.

YouTube began rolling the feature out to creators across web, mobile and TV in September 2026.

What is a Shorts Series?

A Shorts Series is an organized collection of connected Shorts. Creators can structure the videos into seasons and episodes, helping viewers understand the correct order and continue watching the story.

The system is designed for episodic content such as microdramas, serialized comedy, tutorials, challenges and multi-part documentaries.

Custom thumbnails for Shorts Series

YouTube says Shorts Series supports custom thumbnails. That is especially useful on TV and other surfaces where viewers may discover an episode outside the normal vertical Shorts feed.

The thumbnail should make the episode easy to recognize while keeping the visual identity consistent with the rest of the series.

Sequential playback

Sequential playback is another important part of the feature. Instead of forcing viewers to manually find part two or the next episode, Shorts Series is designed to make continued viewing more natural.

For creators, this means an episodic format can generate more session depth if every episode gives viewers a clear reason to continue.

Why YouTube is investing in microdramas

YouTube says microdramas generated more than 6.5 billion views in the first half of 2026. Watch time grew by more than 50% year over year.

Even though microdramas are strongly associated with mobile viewing, YouTube says microdrama views on TV increased by more than 90% year over year.

That helps explain why Shorts Series is being designed as a cross-screen format rather than a mobile-only feature.

Shorts Series on TV

YouTube is increasingly treating TV as a major creator surface. More than half of YouTube’s top 100 creators have TV as their most-watched interface, according to the company’s September 2026 announcement.

Shorts Series can therefore appear as an episodic experience on the biggest screen in the home, not only inside the vertical feed on a phone.

Comments and Community posts are also coming to TV

YouTube is expanding creator interaction on televisions at the same time. Voice input can be used to post comments directly from a TV, and YouTube says Community posts are also coming to TV in the coming months.

On web and mobile, posts can now also be recommended inside the Shorts feed.

Who should use Shorts Series?

  • Creators publishing multi-part stories.
  • Short-form educational channels.
  • Comedy creators with recurring characters.
  • Channels creating serialized challenges.
  • Creators experimenting with vertical microdramas.

How to plan a strong series

  1. Define one clear story or learning outcome for the season.
  2. Make every episode understandable on its own.
  3. End with a natural reason to watch the next episode.
  4. Use consistent thumbnails and naming.
  5. Keep episode numbers obvious without making the title unreadable.
  6. Review retention to see where viewers stop moving through the sequence.

Bottom line

Shorts Series gives episodic short-form creators a structure that was previously missing: seasons, episodes, custom thumbnails and sequential playback. The most important shift is that the experience is designed to work across web, mobile and TV.
